IIT Khargpur: The first Indian Institute of Technology was born in May 1950 at Hijli, Khargpur, in the eastern India. Initially, the IIT started functioning from 5, Esplanade East, Calcutta and very soon shifted to Hijli in Sept. 1950. The present name 'Indian Institute of Technology' was adopted before the formal inauguration of the Institute on August 18, 1951, by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. IIT Khargpur started its journey at the old Hijli Detention Camp where some of our great freedom fighters toiled and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country.
On Sept. 15, 1956, the Parliament of India passed an act known as the Indian Institute of Technology (Khargpur) Act declaring it as an Institute of national importance. It was also given the status of an autonomous University. From this modest start in 1950, IIT Khargpur has been engaged in a steady process of development with about 18 academic departments and five centers of excellence. IIT Guwahati: Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic program commenced from 1995.At present the Institute has nine departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programs. Departments of Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering have been established with student intake from July 2002. IIT Roorkee: The Roorkee College was established in 1847 as the First Engineering College in the British Empire. The college was renamed as The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. It was given the status of University by Act No. IX of 1948 of the United Province (Uttar Pradesh) in recognition of its performance and its potential and keeping in view the needs of post-independent India.
